The Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Salihu Kalenjeni, has raised concerns over a foreign-based armed religious group known as Lakurawa, which is reportedly recruiting youths by offering ₦1 million for membership.
The group, believed to have migrated from Libya, Mali, and Niger Republic, has set up camp in the Tsauni forest, spanning five local government areas in Sokoto State, and extending to the border with Niger Republic. Lakurawa has been linked to a deadly attack along the Gudu road, where four soldiers were killed during a recent patrol.
In an interview with the press, Kalenjeni revealed that the group is imposing their own laws on local communities, forcing people to pay Zakkat (a form of religious tax) while also engaging in robberies. He highlighted a recent incident where the group stole ₦2 million from a shop owner, seized his car, and only returned it after the owner paid ₦350,000.
The armed group, claiming to fight against the Nigerian government, has also been involved in stealing motorcycles in Balle, the headquarters of Gudu LGA. Kalenjeni noted that the bandits collaborating with Lakurawa often operate in local communities during the day and retreat to the forest at night. He also revealed that they are using drones to monitor the movements of security forces.
Deputy Governor Engr. Idris Gobir confirmed that an assessment indicated the group possesses sophisticated weapons and is involved in criminal activities across five local government areas in Sokoto. He expressed concern about the threat posed to the state, especially as it continues to grapple with ongoing banditry.
Gobir reassured the public that security agencies are actively addressing the emerging threat and that the state government is working closely with federal security forces to protect citizens and maintain peace. He also expressed hope that a recent study tour by Course 33 participants from the National Defence College would provide valuable insights and solutions to the growing security challenges in the region.
Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, leader of the study delegation, confirmed that a detailed report would be submitted following the tour.
