The protester, clad only in underwear, has quickly become a symbol for those opposing the Islamic Republic’s harsh treatment of individuals challenging its oppressive laws.
A senior UN official has expressed concern over the student’s arrest.
“I will be closely following this case, including the authorities’ actions,” stated Mai Sato, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, sharing a video of the incident on X.
Under Iranian law, all women—regardless of their religion—are required to wear headscarves in public. Since the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, after her arrest for hijab violations, the government has intensified enforcement of these rules. This has led to widespread protests, during which security forces killed over 550 people and detained thousands more.
