Pro-Wike lawmakers in Rivers State, led by Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, have quietly retracted part of an affidavit filed at the Federal High Court, which confirmed their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move follows tensions between Nyesom Wike, the former governor, and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara. The lawmakers claimed they were compelled to defect due to “uncertainty and confusion” within the PDP.
Sources reveal they visited the court on Wednesday to withdraw the affidavit that supported their earlier legal claims, which allowed them to maintain their positions in the Assembly. The affidavit included allegations of threats from the PDP regarding their seats.
Withdrawing this affidavit undermines the court orders that had protected their positions. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other entities were initially named in the suit, which sought to prevent their seats from being declared vacant.
This strategic withdrawal raises questions about the lawmakers’ future and the ongoing political dynamics in Rivers State.
