Pretoria, South Africa – The Department of Home Affairs has announced its intention to revoke the identity and travel documents of former Miss South Africa finalist Chidimma Adetshina and her mother, who was born in Mozambique. This follows the conclusion of an investigation, which has now been referred to the Hawks for potential fraud charges.
The decision comes after the Adetshinas did not respond by the Monday deadline to justify why their South African documents should remain valid. Home Affairs Director-General Tommy Makhode stated that officials had visited a property linked to Adetshina in an attempt to locate her mother, who is believed to still be in South Africa.
The department is puzzled by how her mother managed to travel to Nigeria last month to attend the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, which Adetshina won, as social media posts confirm her attendance at the event.
“We have been unable to trace the passport she used to enter South Africa from Mozambique before traveling to Nigeria,” said Albert Matsaung, the acting Deputy Director-General for immigration.
