On October 29, the House of Representatives moved forward with a bill allowing military participation in food production to enhance food security and diversify the economy.
Sponsored by Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), the bill proposes creating Armed Forces Farms and Ranches to boost agricultural output. Benson highlighted that this initiative aims to leverage military resources to reduce dependence on oil revenues and address food security challenges.
He noted that military farms have existed primarily for supporting personnel and that this scheme will utilize the military’s extensive land holdings without requiring new land acquisition. It will integrate crop production with livestock and aquaculture, collaborating with various government agencies.
The initiative is expected to stabilize food prices, create jobs, and impart agricultural skills, contributing to local economies and overall economic growth. Benson also stressed the link between food insecurity and unrest, arguing that military engagement in agriculture could help combat crime and enhance stability.
