Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, may soon face new criminal charges after a recent investigation into claims surrounding his prison sentence. Allegations suggest he served time in a private apartment and bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.
A panel established by the Minister of Interior found no evidence that Bobrisky stayed outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre during his six-month sentence for naira abuse. However, the panel’s report accused him of tarnishing the reputation of the Nigerian Correctional Service with false statements. It recommended charges of defamation and corrupt practices if the bribery claims are proven.
Additionally, the investigation implicated four correctional officers, including former Controller Ben Rabbi-Freeman, for mishandling documentation related to Bobrisky’s transfer. The panel emphasized the need for a thorough audit of all inmates and the implementation of better oversight in correctional facilities.
A senior NCoS officer explained that what some refer to as “VIP treatment” is actually a system designed to accommodate inmates based on health and other individual factors. This situation has underscored the challenges faced by the correctional system in managing individuals with complex identities like Bobrisky.
